GIRLS RULE THE WORLD:
VISUAL PLEASURE, SEXUAL POLITICS AND IMAGE CONTROL
Monday 14th September, 19.00
LVMH Lecture Theatre, Central St Martins, Granary Sq, King’s Cross, London N1C 4AA
Bug have teamed up with The Photographer’s Gallery to curate a panel discussion on how women are portrayed in contemporary music culture.
While performers such as Beyonce and Taylor Swift have achieved widespread respect and multi-platform success for their seemingly strong ownership of image, others like Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Nikki Minaj are pilloried for playing to a culture of pornification. But is the debate as polarized as it may seem? Are women exploiting their sexuality to their advantage, negating it – such as the artist Sia does, or simply pandering to male fantasy? What do women need to do to make an impact today? And who really calls the shots?
Bug’s Ekow Eshun and Miranda Sawyer will be joined by award-winning performer Little Boots and Juliette Larthe, producer of music videos by artists such as M.I.A., Kanye West and Rihanna, to discuss shifts in authorship, image-making and the role of women.
